Correction: Michael Shelton is not related to Qwenton Freeman

I've received a couple calls from Michael Shelton's mother, with her informing me that her son is not related to Qwenton Freeman. I just wanted to pass that tidbit along. There used to be an entry on this page saying that was the case; it's been taken down.

For other information on Shelton, including the complete affidavit from the November robbery, click on his tag below.

More details come out on home invasion, now a marijuana robbery

The affidavit comes out and this home invasion is now a marijuana robbery. More men have been added to the charges, including Qwenton Freeman. It also turns out this could've gone a lot worse. One of the victims insisted that the armed robbers take him to his safe, where he kept loaded guns. This victim says he was "planning on getting his loaded 9mm handgun and protecting him and his friends." This information comes from the 25-page affidavit, which is available for download from The Missoulian.

After the jump is the complete affidavit.

Three more Griz arrested, just as serious as before

Three Montana Grizzlies football players have been arrested for charges stemming from a home invasion near campus. Here's a quick summary from The Missoulian:

According to the jail, 19-year-old [freshman cornerback Jeremy Pate] was arrested on charges of aggravated assault, aggravated kidnapping, burglary and robbery. [Junior running back Greg Coleman], 22, was booked on charges of assault with a weapon, kidnapping, burglary and robbery.

And [defensive end Michael Shelton], 21, was arrested on charges of assault with a weapon, burglary and two counts of robbery.

Oh, and there could be more:

“There are three or four people out there we have to verify their connection to this, but we can't locate them. We don't know if they have taken off or if they got scared off,” Ludemann said. “There's still some information we have to lock down.”

Coach Bobby Hauck's reaction:

“I'm sickened and embarrassed by this,” said Grizzly football coach Bobby Hauck. “This is different to me than anything else that has happened. There's some embarrassment to me personally. We do everything we can to educate these guys, and it's like having your own children get into trouble.

“I don't have any details on what supposedly transpired. All I know is that we had three players arrested and we have 100 hard-working kids on our team that will be negatively affected by this.”

First off, I want to say I am not solely blaming Bobby Hauck or the administration. Even so, let's start this off with a big Stephen A. Smith HOWEVA. It's easy for anyone to say "a few individuals are ruining it all for everyone else." There are a lot of schools and a lot of football teams where a few individuals don't ruin it for everyone else by rampaging into someone's home, tasing them and smacking them over the head with the butt end of a gun. Remember, Michael Shelton just got here. This was after he left the University of Arizona because he was kicked off the football reason for disciplinary reasons.

I agree with what most people are saying, almost all of the blame should come down on these three individuals. However, someone has to tighten things up somewhere because we can't have individuals making these same mistakes.

Griz confident but cautious going into game at Sac State

Bobby Hauck & Co are confident going into this weekend's game against the Hornets and why shouldn't they be? In their 12 meetings with Sac State, the Griz have never lost. That doesn't mean the Griz aren't wary of what could happen.

From the Great Falls Tribune:

"They've been a really good team in Sacramento," Hauck said of the Hornets, who are 1-0 at home this season and 0-4 on the road. That victory was a 38-9 romp on Sept. 29 over Northern Arizona (2-1), which is considered a valid Big Sky contender.

"If you look at the last few years, they've won a lot of games in Sacramento. Our four games previously with them, we have played really well at Sac (26-0 in 2003, 31-14 in 2005). A lot of teams can't say that."

The team is also looking forward to experiencing their first road game of the season. From the Missoulian:

“That shows what kind of team you are, if you can go on the road and focus and kind of make it like a home environment,” running back Lex Hilliard said.

“We've been down that road, talking about our schedule,” fifth-year coach Bobby Hauck said. “The first two (conference) games, we don't have any control over.

“They'll be excited. It is a great team-building thing. We'll go down there with 58 players and our coaches, and try to get a win.”

Also of note: Marc Mariani won't make the trip because of injury and Michael Shelton isn't quite ready for game situations. From the GFT again: "Michael has to know what everybody's doing (before he plays)," said Hauck. "It's not like pickup hoops or something."

Griz pick up drop-down defensive end

As KECI reported last night and the Montana Kaimin reports this morning, the University of Montana football team added transfer Michael Shelton, a defensive end from the University of Arizona. Shelton started practicing on Monday.

Here's something that sounds a little too familiar:

According to Tom Duddleston, the Arizona Wildcats’ sports information director, former University of Arizona defensive end Michael Shelton left the team prior to fall camp.

He said Shelton was suspended from spring drills for disciplinary reasons. And in late August Shelton worked out a deal with the Wildcats’ football program to find a place to relocate, Duddleston said.

Because he's an FBS drop-down, he's eligible to play as soon as this weekend. I doubt he'll be ready by then but you never know.

According to Scout.com, Shelton was a four star recruit coming out of high school, where he earned several accolades.
