Portland State loses starting QB and FB for season

The Portland State Vikings came into this season with as much hype as any team in college football. There was a Jerry Glanville feature story in every paper in the Northwest. Well, things opened with a huge dud as the Vikings fell to McNeese State, 35-12, down in Louisiana. As Ian Ruder notes, the game did not go well. The Cowboys tried to give the game away and the Viks wouldn't take it.

On top of looking terrible and getting blown out, the Vikings lost their starting quarterback and fullback for the season. Quarterback Tygue Howland is out with a serious injury to his foot while fullback Bobby McClintock blew out his knee.

Colorado transfer Brian White takes over at quarterback. I wasn't too impressed at first but he showed last year that he's capable of running the offense. On McClintock: he's the second fullback they've lost for the year so there will be a couple running backs behind the line for the remainder of the season.

A CU dropdown at QB scares who more?

For anyone who hasn't heard: Portland State University signed Brian White, a former Colorado University quarterback who dropped out of the school earlier this month after failing to move up the depth chart.

PSU lost the #1 and #2 QBs on the depth chart during a loss to Cal (can whoever scheduled this game look any worse?). The injuries mean White will be backing up third stringer Rob Freeman in the Vikings' matchup this Saturday with the Griz.

When I first read this story I thought it was extremely unfair that this team could sign a 1-A transfer and have him playing before he was even caught up on classes, but then after really looking at it I realized how awful it must feel for this to be an option.

The Missoulian compared PSU's signing to Montana grabbing Josh Swogger. No, not even close.

Swogger started as a sophomore at Washington State and lost his place due to injury while White is transferring to PSU because he failed to move up the depth chart of an offense that only managed 10 points against Montana State. I-AA UC Davis put up 45 while tossing a shutout and Division II Chadron State scored 35 in their win over the poooor Cats.

White was a bad quarterback on an awful team. The Vikings should be very worried if this is who they are relying on to carry them if starter Sawyer Smith can't play. From ESPN:
White had fallen behind both James Cox and Bernard Jackson on the depth chart after being the leading candidate for the starting job for much of spring ball and fall camp.

White was the front-runner to replace record-setting quarterback Joel Klatt coming into this year after his performance in the Champs Sports Bowl on Dec. 27, 2005.

With Klatt sidelined by a concussion from a vicious hit in Colorado's loss to Texas in the Big 12 title game, White replaced an ineffective Cox with 9 minutes left and engineered Colorado's lone touchdown drive. He finished 7-of-12 for 81 yards and a TD in Colorado's 19-10 loss to Clemson.
