THIS is Griz basketball...

Like the past two years, hopes and expectations were high going into this basketball season. But unlike last year and the year before that, the Griz were supposed meet those expectations.  Tinkle gave the team a new attitude, the cancerous players were gone and we had depth and skill at every position. What a joke that was.

In one game, all the optimism I had for this supposedly changed team has been completely erased. Sure there may be more talent but it's the same damn team. Same slow start, same poor shooting, same lackadaisical defense, same shoddy rebounding and the same ability to roll over at the first sign of resistance.

This team is every bit as heartless as the squad that got destroyed by Portland State on Senior Night. Where's the leadership and fire we were supposed to see? Jesus, McGillis got his first field goal more than halfway through the second half, with the Griz down somewhere around 25. Hasquet goes 3 for 11 from the field and 0 for 4 from the line.

You feel like you have to blame someone but it's tough to know where to look when there were absolutely no positives to draw from this. Why even get on the bus guys? There's not much more to say than it's about time this program got it's act together. Recruit all you want but there's no difference between a good recruit and a bad one when neither shows up on game night. Teams across the Big Sky Conference are smirking tonight. If I were them, I would be too.

The notion that this would be the team that brings Montana basketball back to a state of prominence was cute while it lasted. Well, there is the fact that hardly anyone here follows Griz basketball at this point so maybe no one at home will hear about the drubbing and we'll still get the same terrible crowd down at Dahlberg for when we barely beat Western. Games like this—which are becoming all too frequent—make me wish I wasn't one of the few people who invest so much in Griz basketball.

I followed the game on the radio, and it wasn't even worth listening. Colorado st last season was on the receiving end of this, and they were a team in transition with a first yr coach... look at them now. I had plans of watching the Duke game with some of my friends from Duke.. I don't think I want to watch or put myself through that. NO faith!

Colin have you been sleeping....It wasn't the same bad shooting....Slow start, etc as last year....WE BEAT THEM LAST YEAR BY 39!!!!!!

Colin - November 14, 2008 10:30 PM

Heh, I know. Then we fell into the tendencies we showed today.

WOW !!!! That was stinky.

I think you meant, the cancerous players and coaches stayed, and the two best players graduated and are playing PRO ball over seas, and the other good players changed schools.

From this point on every Matt Martin-related comment, unless stellar and relevant, gets deleted. Get over your love affair already, Jesus.

I knew this game was not going to be good...i'm shocked at how bad we went down though...we had to know they would be fired up 2 play us after we embarrassed them last year...we'll bounce back in conference play once we get through this brutal non conference schedule...if not we should can tinkle and bring back coach K...Losing Strait was tough Qvale lacks the toughness and consistancy that he brought

You know who would probably make a good coach for this particular Griz team? Robin Selvig. His girls make FTs and nut up when the other team makes a run and goes up big.

As far as Qvale, I'm sure his inexperience showed a bit but I think he had the best statline, for what it's worth, with 15 and 10.

Yeah he had a good game but we'll see if he can be consistant like Strait was...you could almost bank on a double double from Strait every game...and Robin should go coach the guys i'm with u on that one...I

Doesn't anybody have the balls to say the real reason Griz basketball is in the dumps is Tinkle. I grew up watching him play and I know he is a great guy, but when it comes to motivating and coaching kids he just doesn't have it. He was a good assistant for Krysko, but he doesn't have what it takes as a head coach. Minus Portland State they probably have had the most talent on their squad the past two years with nothing to show for it. Portland State is better this year than in the past going by their victory of University of Portland who just beat Washington, so the rest of the schools are playing for second this year.
