Griz pick up drop-down defensive end
As KECI reported last night and the Montana Kaimin reports this morning, the University of Montana football team added transfer Michael Shelton, a defensive end from the University of Arizona. Shelton started practicing on Monday. Here's something that sounds a little too familiar:
According to Tom Duddleston, the Arizona Wildcats’ sports information director, former University of Arizona defensive end Michael Shelton left the team prior to fall camp.Because he's an FBS drop-down, he's eligible to play as soon as this weekend. I doubt he'll be ready by then but you never know.
He said Shelton was suspended from spring drills for disciplinary reasons. And in late August Shelton worked out a deal with the Wildcats’ football program to find a place to relocate, Duddleston said.
According to Scout.com, Shelton was a four star recruit coming out of high school, where he earned several accolades.
Shelton sounds like the real deal. I'm guessing he's stayed in shape and will probably play sooner than anyone thinks.
But what took him so long to get here? This guy missed half of Wildcat fall camp. The blurb you include in your report says Shelton "worked out a deal with the Wildcats' football program to find a place to relocate."
The man has a redshirt year left. I'm guessing he planned on transferring to another BCS school and burning that shirt this year. His school probably wasn't going to sign off unless he dropped down.
This guy combined for 23 sacks his jr and sr years of high school. Hart to let a guy like that go to any team you might eventually play.
Did Shelton also miss the first four weeks of school? That's got to hurt.
I agree. He sounds like he has a ton of talent.
What took him so long to get here? I have no idea. I don't believe he started class until he started practice. One possible reason that I hope isn't the case, maybe other schools were scared off by discipline issues.
I'm really rooting for this guy and am glad he's here but with what's happened in the past we have to be careful.
