How can UM stand by recruitment of Qwenton Freeman?
The Montana Kaimin has a story with the University's response to the arrests of Jimmy Wilson and Qwenton Freeman and their defense of the recruiting policies.
Associate Athletic Director Jean Gee said President Dennison’s office treats all student athletes the same as regular students. That includes not running background checks on potential players. The Kaimin story does reference the arrest of Jimmy Wilson for murder but it fails to mention the off-field troubles of fellow cornerback Qwenton Freeman. Freeman, who was also dismissed from the football team, is no longer with us for lesser crimes but he has a history UM should've known about. If you're "talking to every possible person about that student" then it shouldn't take a formal background check to find out he had a warrant out for his arrest when he was recruited. When it comes to Freeman, the University should make at least the tiniest admission of guilt.
“They talk to every possible person about that student. Coaches, teachers, there are a lot of rules about what a coach can and cannot do,” said Gee. “Our president has made it very clear we will not be doing formal background checks and he was very public in his statement. From a compliance standpoint, our student athletes are to be treated like every other student – no better and no worse – during the admissions process.”
